I just moved to Brattleboro with my dog. Where we lived before, there were lots of dog parks and places to bring your dog where you knew there would be other dogs to run and play with. I’m wondering if there is any outdoor place, official or not, where people take their dogs to play with other dogs. Poor guy needs some new friends!

Welcome
I mostly see loner dogs… that is, dogs with their owners taking a walk in the woods or in neighborhoods.
I have a vague recollection of someone saying Ft Dummer is a place to take dogs for group outings, but I may be remembering incorrectly.
Dog owners?
I saw "Yankee Dog Training"
I saw “Yankee Dog Training” in Brattleboro advertise socialization groups. Haven’t looked into them but it is an idea for you.
I’m also interested in more socialization opportunities for my dogs. A dog park would be nice.
Just occurred to me that I
Just occurred to me that I should ask my vet or the humane society on my next visit …
Wantastiquet Walks
We have not found a place in town. We go across the river to the Wantastiquet trails where there are lots of friendly Brattleboro folks with their pooches.
Perhaps since that “historic” building on the other side of the tracks from the train station is to too expensive for anyone to renovate, the town should fence it that area in and use it as a dog park.
spontaneous
In big cities, “dog parks” often just occur. They are the places where a group of people with dogs go at the same time each day. The dogs run around and the people talk. Sometimes it is just a part of a bigger park.
so, if everyone just started going to a park, a “dog park” would be born. No permission needed.
Which one should be used? : )
True
In Manhattan, we went to a schoolyard in the evening. It was fenced in and the dogs would run around playing while we hung out and chatted.
Dog park
Some years ago (when the town had more money), I suggested that the town fence in the wooded hill on Elliot between the Parking Garage and the (then) laundromat to enable it to be used as a dog park. While the terrain wasn’t ideal, the land wasn’t being used for anything else, and wouldn’t likely be.
The response on iBrattleboro was highly negative, bordering on ridicule. The issue centered around dog-poop and the resulting odor (which some seemed to believe would be detected as far away as Putney).
BTW, even without the fence, dogs currently poop there daily.
Bananas
This has nothing to do with anything, but…
My dog Jake will eat anything, but he won’t go near a banana.
Is this normal?
Hmmm
It’s bananas!
Perhaps he thinks it is an unripe bone.
Good idea!
Thanks for the thoughts! Perhaps we should start a dog park at a school yard in the evenings. Which one would be best? I could start a facebook page to get the word out. The high school seems busy in the evenings, so maybe the elementary school?
Of course if the town were to start one, that would be great, but I hear fences are pricey. I would think Brattleboro folks would be into it and it would be a great service from the town.
Oak Grove?
Oak Grove School has a great fenced in yard! And I’ve found it to be pretty quiet during the summer/nights/weekends. More generally, I find the (a) challenge is that most spaces in town that are fenced in are also posted “no dogs”. Dog park is high on my list of things I would love to see in this town! Thanks for re-starting the conversation.
The Crowell Lot
would be a good place for a dog park.
Crowell Park
The space at Crowell is already dedicated to various park uses which may not be so compatible at times with a large influx of pets and deposits, but the open field down off sawdust alley is very spacious allowing for plenty of running room off leash (already fenced in), problem is Cersosimo wants $200,000 for it.
um, I have to ask...
Was the Crowell lot a serious suggestion? Or is someone trying to have a little fun with us?
Pulling our leg
I think he was pulling our legs (or is it paws?)
Maybe...
if it is Chihuahuas only! 😉
the cardinal sin...
I am going to post something not related to a dog park, but of interest to all who love dogs. Please know that, despite the success of the My Dog is Cool campaign, dogs continue to die in cars on very mild days. April and May are often the months where many deaths are reported, due to our perception that the weather is perfect. As the months grow hotter, people recognize the risk and reports seem to fall a bit. Here are only a few reports that recently made the news.
