Thugs, Politicians and Guns

I can’t stop being outraged at the lack of action by politicians on the issue of gun control. It would be easy to become insensitive to the daily reports of mass shootings in this country but every time I hear about one I become more and more depressed because I know that nothing will change in my lifetime, if ever.

This lack of action makes it clear that the U.S. political system is controlled by amoral, unethical and inhumane people. It is fueled by self-interest and the only time that things get done is when politicians think they can get more votes or more financial support in the next election.

Gun control is not about guns or mental health. It is about a failed political system.

Is Youth Services’ Helicopter Golf Ball Drop Raffle a Perfect Father’s Day Gift?

Youth Services’ Helicopter Golf Ball Drop, a hallmark of Youth Services’ Annual Golf Tournament, is a game of chance with incredible odds, according to Cathy Coonan, Chair of the Youth Services’ Board of Directors. Coonan described the $100 balls as a perfect gift for a Dad on Father’s Day, as no assembly is required and a $3000 cash pot putting a smile on anyone’s face.

Balls numbered 1-100 are purchased, Coonan said, loaded into a bucket and transported by helicopter over the 9th fairway at Brattleboro Country Club where they are dropped from a 20 feet height. The owner of the numbered ball which lands closest to the pin collects $3000 cash.

Big Harvest

Edible-Weeds

Almost entirely edible weeds from my raised beds, with just a few kale leaves included.

I am seriously NOT uprooting weeds, just cutting them down to within an inch or two from the ground so that they can grow back. The idea is that if they do not block sunlight from my crop plants, and if the soil is so rich that it can feed plants even if they are close together, then the weeds will not hurt my crops. In fact, at a couple of inches tall, these weeds act like mulch, keeping the soil from drying out.

Re-Create Yourself

Our species is living longer and that means that we have to become creative as we look for ways to exercise and stay mobile during our advancing years. I started inline skating more than 25 years ago and it has always been my go-to exercise.

But bodies change and age takes its toll.

I had hoped to keep skating as long as I could walk but that proved to be an unrealistic goal. Osteoarthritis has forced me to recalibrate my expectations as I try to deal with worn out joints and spine and spinal cord issues.

RoboCalls

I’ve come to expect RoboCalls. I usually get 3 or four per day. Some days I get none.
However, today I keep getting them. I estimate I’ve received at least twenty, so far.

¿Wassup?

Town of Brattleboro COVID Update June 4, 2021

” WHAT IS NEW TODAY

• Effective today, the Selectboard has terminated the Townwide emergency order that required face coverings to be worn inside all facilities (public, private, and non-profit) where the public is invited. Individual organizations and building owners can still require face coverings at their own facilities.

The Town of Brattleboro thanks everyone for complying with the Townwide “mask order” during the 54 weeks that it was in effect.

• The public may now enter the Gibson Aiken Center without an appointment.

The number of spectators is still limited for indoor programs. Masks are still required at all times while in the building.

• At this time, masks are still required inside all Town of Brattleboro government facilities. “

VFW Operation Homefront’s Shower Update

Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 was proud to be a drop off point for Operation Homefront’s Star Spangled Babies Shower. Operation Homefront is a nonprofit that assists low-income military families. The Vermont National Guard is facing its biggest deployment in 15 years, where service members are leaving behind their families for a year or longer. A lot of the family members left behind are new mothers and some are first-time mothers.

Memorial Days

Once a year we have a day to remind us of those who have given their lives for this country as well as those we have lost over the years. When you reach a certain point in your life you experience more and more memorial days throughout the year.

Youth and growth is all about gain. We grow physically and our hopes expand into new realities as we create a career path and start to define our lives by relationships. We meet new people and we see the possibilities for making ourselves and the world a better place.
