I know this is a loaded question but where can I find some loons near Bratt? Has anyone heard their calls in Windham County? I returned last week from camping in the N.E.K. and fell in love with their haunting calls. Just curious if anyone knows or not.

Sunset Lake
I seem to remember seeing a loon while canoeing at Sunset Lake a year or so ago. I also remember seeing one (lone and lonely) floating around on the Connecticut River just south of here several years ago. But I’ve never heard one call here. The last time I heard loons calling at night was at Merrymeeting Lake in NH, where I know that they live. It is an incredible call which I’ve only heard very late at night, which adds to the sense of eerie…
Loons near Brattleboro
I also have heard loons on the Connecticut just south of the cement company. More commonly, I have seen and heard them on Stratton Pond, which is an ideal location for these shy birds.
Loon at Bourn Pond
There are nesting loon at Bourn Pond in the Lye Brook Wilderness. Those may be the loon that are sometimes spotted on nearby Stratton Pond. Bourn Pond is a 2.5 mile hike from the nearest trailhead and it’s not on the AT/LT, so there isn’t much human activity there. It’s a nice place to spend the night, and the loon will often provide a magical alarm clock at sunrise.
