The Brattleboro Food Co-op (BFC) is sponsoring a series of four wild mushroom foraging workshops this summer and fall. Led by Justin Garner, a clinical herbalist and founder of Sweet Flag Medicinals, each workshop will focus on whatever edible fungus is popping up in that particular month. Precautions will be taught for harvesting wild mushrooms, as well as cooking instructions and some on the ecology, natural history, flavor and medicinal value of the different species.
Details:
• Maximum: 20 people
• Cost: $30, $25 BFC shareholders (except the last workshop on Sept. 26)
•Dates (highlighted mushroom species for each workshop are in parentheses, but the prevalence of each will depend on the vagaries of the rain gods):
– July 29: (chantarelles & black trumpets). This forage will be a small excursion, mostly for friends & family, but a few spots are available; 5:30 – 8:30 PM
– August 26: (lobster mushrooms); 5:30 – 8:30 PM
– September 9: (hen of the woods – maitake); 5:30 – 8:30 PM

Mushrooms & Agroforestry: These foraging trips are part of the Brattleboro Co-op’s series of workshops on mushrooms this year that is co-sponsored by Tad Montgomery & Associates. The broader intention of these events is to promote economic development through an enhanced relationship with our forests in the Connecticut River Watershed.
