Brattleboro Memorial Hospital President & CEO Steven R. Gordon has been honored with a 2014 American Hospital Association Grassroots Champions Award for exceptional leadership in generating grassroots and community activity in support of a hospital’s mission.
The American Hospital Association (AHA), in partnership with the state hospital associations, presents these awards annually to one individual from each state, with winners being chosen by the state association. The 2014 honorees were recognized at a special Breakfast of Grassroots Champions at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting on May 6 in Washington, DC.
“We depend upon strong local voices to help tell the story of hospitals as cornerstones of the communities they serve,” said Rich Umbdenstock, AHA president and CEO. “This award is a small token of our appreciation for the hard work and dedication of these individuals to improving health and health care in America.”
AHA created the American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award to recognize those hospital leaders who most effectively educate elected officials on how major issues affect the hospital’s vital role in the community, who have done an exemplary job in broadening the base of community support for the hospital, and who are tireless advocates for hospitals and their patients.
According to Bea Grause, president and CEO of the Vermont Association of Hospital and Health Systems (VAHHS), “Steve understands what it takes to create opportunity in his community, including federal advocacy. We appreciate his work on extending the Medicare Dependent Hospital Program and low-volume adjustment.”
BMH Board Chairman Peter Carvell said, “The Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Board of Directors is thrilled that Steve has been recognized with the American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award. Steve is a strong, proactive, visible leader in the Brattleboro community and at the state level. Under his leadership, BMH recently completed its ‘Doorway to Exceptional Care’ capital campaign to build a new $7.5 million Emergency Department that will continue the hospital’s tradition of providing exceptional care. Steve’s vision, experience, and leadership continue to be invaluable in an ever-changing health care environment.”
Gordon has nearly 30 years of experience in health care and hospital management. Prior to joining BMH in 2011, he served as president of Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, MA, and as the chief administrative officer for Children’s Hospital Boston, running their Waltham campus. He also served previously as the vice president for physicians and business development at Newton Wellesley Hospital, and was the former CEO of Parkland Hospital in Derry, NH. Gordon earned a bachelor of arts with honors and a master’s degree in environmental health engineering from Tufts University, and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Minnesota. A Massachusetts native, Gordon is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

A timely award
Steve Gordon works quietly and intelligently to improve our hospital. The award he received emphasized his work in connecting with the community.
