Winter Farmers’ Market Returns to the River Garden

The Winter Farmers’ Market returns to the River Garden for the eighth season of the longest running diverse indoor farmers’ market in southern Vermont. With the upcoming transfer of the River Garden property from BABB to Strolling of the Heifers, the Winter Farmers’ Market keeps it wonderful home on Main St. Fans of the famous outdoor summer farmer’s market in West Brattleboro, can simply follow many of their favorite vendors indoors starting Saturday, November 2 from 10 – 2.

Visitors to the Winter Farmers’ Market in downtown Brattleboro will find more farms and more local produce than ever before. Each week the beautiful River Garden is transformed into a warm welcoming indoor marketplace. You’ll find over 30 vendors including many favorites from past seasons as well as a number of new faces too.

Along with all your fresh produce, syrup, local meats, eggs and other farm products, you’ll find yummy sweets or savory breakfast treats, great lunch offerings, delicious pies, preserves and beautiful handmade gifts. Come for the local farm produce, homemade foods, or holiday gift shopping and stay for a tasty lunch and live music. There is something at the market for everyone.

Tim Stevenson, founder of Post Oil Solutions says, “We are so thrilled to see how this market has grown and developed over the past seven years. We now have more area farmers planting more winter storage crops and using season extension strategies for fresh local greens deep into the winter.”

The Winter Farmers’ Market welcomes EBT and Debit cards. While funding lasts, EBT customers can turn $10 into $20 each week with our Market Match Coupons. This food access program is our commitment to making healthy local food more accessible to more local people. The program is supported through grants and fundraising done by market organizers, in conjunction with a community-match campaign. Individuals, businesses or groups interested in contributing to that effort can contact us to find out more or use the “Donate’ button on the Post Oil Solutions home page.

The Winter Farmers’ Market is sponsored by Post Oil Solutions, a nonprofit sustainability organization actively working to build a viable community-based food system. Open every Saturday through March 29, 2014. Market hours are generally 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with extended hours for holiday shopping (open from 10 – 3pm) between Thanksgiving and Christmas. • Winter Market

So glad the market will be back at home on Main St. again this season!

  • Vermont Quince will be there!

Last year, Vermont Quince was a day vendor at the Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market and benefited from excellent feedback on what has become one of our most popular products, a quince mustard. This year, we have been accepted as a weekly vendor beginning tomorrow and will be seeking feedback on a couple of new products – a quince-infused vinegar & quince-ginger chutney.

Of course, we’ll have also have samples of our dulce de membrillo (quince paste), quince jelly, quince mustard, and new seasonal products, quince-crabapple jelly and quince-crabapple-ginger preserves.

Please stop by our table at the River Garden & get your quince on! We value your thoughts on old and new recipes alike!

    • And so many more!

Joining us this season are Circle Mountain Farm, Franklin Farm, Keep It Real Organic, Fantasy Wear, Bordonaro Jewelry along with most of the familiar faces from last year…too many to name here. And correct, Vermont Quince will be there every week!

  • Holiday market TODAY

Hello – thought I’d bump this thread as a reminder that the Winter Farmers’ Market is an excellent place to do your shopping for the holidays. If you haven’t made it there this year, please consider checking out all the new and old vendors alike – plenty of interesting new wares.

It all happens at the River Garden beginning at 10 a.m. I’m pretty sure there’s an extra hour today, til 3.

Hope to see you there! And as an itty bitty incentive, if you mention this post, Vermont Quince will give you a 2-oz jar of either Paradise Jelly (Quince-Cranberry-Crabapple) or Quince Jelly. 😉

  • Farmers' Market at the River Garden TODAY

In the mood for some great food and/or a little local shopping? Today’s farmers’ market at the River Garden is open an extra hour – 10a.m. – 3p.m. and will be chock full with vendors offering a wide variety of ag & specialty food products, prepared foods, and crafts.

Here’s a shout-out to the local businesses who have stepped up to support the Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market’s ‘market match’ program — designed to help stretch the dollars of our neighbors with low incomes who shop at the farmers’ market. Please consider showing these community-minded businesses a little extra love this holiday season:

    Amy’s Bakery Arts Cafe
    Brattleboro Bike
    KitchenSync
    Rachelle Ackerman massage
    TJ Buckley’s
    Twice Upon a Time
    Vermont Quince Company
    Whetstone Station

Hope to see you at the market. Once again, mention this post at the Vermont Quince booth and take away a little jar of either paradise or quince jelly.

    • an ounce of prevention...

I think it is fair, and important, to be aware that not all businesses in town (or listed here) are community-minded, depending on the definition you use for community-minded.

Possibly it would be helpful to have criteria developed by BABB so that people can more accurately determine if a business actually is (or is not) community-minded, so that they can make an informed decision about whom they would choose to engage in business with.

Having sanctions visited upon an individual and her/his business by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation – for blatant deception, dishonesty, and misrepresentation of oneself and her/his state licensure status to the community – is not, in my mind, community-minded. At least I hope that is what a majority in any community would agree with. And, I think consumers need to be very aware of whom they are dealing with, particularly if the business relationship involves the fundamental element of trust.

  • Farmers' Market TODAY

Come on down to the Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market today 10-3 for a fresh blast of community life – and some holiday shopping! Once again, the River Garden will be full of wonderful vendors selling a wide variety of produce, baked products, specialty foods, crafts & much more.

Today’s also the raffle drawing of the gorgeous Olde English holiday crackers donated by Verde. Be sure to stop by the market booth to pick up a few tickets – all proceeds support the ‘market match’ program which helps stretch the dollars of our neighbors with low incomes. THANKS, Verde!!!!

See you there? Once again, Vermont Quince will give a little jar of quince jelly to anyone who mentions this post.

  • Farmers' Market TODAY

It’s that time of the week again!

The Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market should be more relaxed than it has been the last few weeks – record sales were recorded last Saturday! whootWHOOT!

In any case, please consider coming down to the River Garden, 10-2. I’m not sure who will be entertaining us musically today but there definitely will be plenty to enjoy!

  • Farmers' Market TODAY 10-2

ooh – sun just burst through the trees here!
Below is the notice about the Winter Farmers’ Market that came via email earlier this week.

VTQ is seeking feedback on two new products – a quince-ginger-lime chutney and quince caramels. The former is a genuine taste sensation but I wonder if the lime & ginger overpower the quince. I hadn’t made the quince caramels for a while and forgot how much I like the recipe. Again, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on how I might tweak both recipes.

    Happy 2014!
Yes it will be cold to start the day, but don’t let that stop you. Come to the market Saturday and find out about our newest vendor, Green Mountain Flour. In addition to some wood-fired breads, you’ll find assorted packages of locally grown and milled grains!
Still lots of farms with a great array of seasonal produce including lots of root vegetables, so healthy and yummy in soups and stews on these cold days!
Now that the holiday hustle and bustle is over, you’ll find the market much more spacious, and thus an even better place to meander through and do your shopping, or sit down for a warm lunch, or a baked treat with coffee or tea.

Music this week by the fabulously entertaining Peter Siegel

As always, Debit & EBT welcome…and Market Match Coupons continue to be available…thanks in part to many contributions large and small from our community!

    Happy 2014!

    See you at the market…

  • Farmers' Market - Saturday 10-2 - River Garden

Here’s the email re tomorrow’s market that came through today:

Yes it’s cold outside, but don’t let that keep you away from Saturday’s Winter Farmers’ Market! In fact it’s a perfect time to meet Midge, a new vendor bringing beautiful hand knit sweaters and hats to the market tomorrow! Or start thinking about Valentine’s Day approaching and what you might want for your sweetie…something wonderful from Wild Flour Bakery or handmade chocolate truffles from Lindsay of Coddle & Cosset Chocolate, another new face at the market!

Still plenty of apples, potatoes, carrots, beets, onions and more in the world of farm fresh produce, along with some of the best preserves you’ll find anywhere! Great baked goods galore, and we even have locally milled flours and pancake mixes and more. The pancake samples last week were great! Then of course there is the wonderful selection of local beef, pork, lamb and chicken!

Thanks to the generous support of the greater community, we still have Market Match Coupons to help 3SquaresVT shoppers stretch their food dollars while getting healthy nutritious food.

And this Saturday morning is your last chance to enter our January raffle for chances at a great selection of prizes from the market and from some of our fabulous downtown merchants. We’ll be drawing the winners at noon.

Open at the River Garden from 10-2 with music in the cafe from 11-1 by Jim Kurty & Scott Sizer.

    Hope to see you there!
