A BIGGER PRIZE

I told myself I was going to try to keep away from writing about the madman who is running this country. All of us have to figure out a way to preserve our sanity for the next four years and retreat has become an option for many. But the future that I see unfolding demands to be talked about because all of our lives may be transformed in ways we do not welcome.
I got a call from a woman in Florida who is married to a Puerto Rican man and they have two small children. They are living in a state of heightened fear every day and they are looking for a safer place to live. She knew nothing about Brattleboro but happened upon our little town in the cybersphere and wanted to talk to someone who lives here.
Her family was in a supermarket last week and a friend was speaking Spanish. An ICE agent happened to be nearby and he whisked the man off. They later found out he was deported. She sees these kinds of scenes playing out every day. When her husband goes out she has him text her when he arrives at his destination. They do not want to keep living that way. I told her Brattleboro might be a little safer- for now.
When the Supreme Court granted presidential immunity for crimes committed in office that was the day that the rule of law was thrown into the trash. That is why Trump is running rampant over the legal system and that is why he is ignoring rulings by judges. He knows that he is above the law.
Trump is throwing everything at the wall and waiting to see what sticks. Lawsuits against his actions are being filed and it is impossible to know how everything will turn out. It is my feeling that he doesn’t really care what happens as a result of his insanely reckless actions. He has a bigger prize in mind.
In four years Trump will try to figure out a way to either delay or completely stop the next presidential election. He and his twin Musk have become intoxicated with unfettered power. When someone amasses great wealth and they have an insatiable ego the next thing they go after is power. Just look at the members of the power club- Zuckerberg and his buddies who sat near the twins at the inauguration. They all want a piece of the pie and it looks like they will get it.
How will Trump pull this off? He has already started the process by showing that no one is willing to challenge him when he ignores court orders. In his mind there are no consequences for whatever he does and reality is bearing that out so far.
Our legal system and our form of government seems to be powerless against a president with no morals, ethics or sense of decency.
Will the Republicans in congress continue to kiss the ring? Do they even understand what they are supporting? Four years is a long time and the longer Trump moves ahead denying that the courts and congress have any power over him the more he looks like a king or a dictator. Putin, Orban and other dictators will support Trump if he decides to eliminate elections and rule for life. No one seems able to stop him and he knows it.
How long will we allow this man to trample our rights and destroy our country to feed his ego and the ego of his friends?
So far no one has the balls to fight back. It is time for the people to take to the streets because our form of government is failing the people.
Trump should be instructive to liberals
It’s been so long since we’ve seen any official or party actually wield power that we’ve forgotten what it looks like. Imagine if we had a democratic president pushing half as hard for Medicare for All as red team is for any of the hundred things they’re doing! It would be like FDR’s first term.
But it’s hard to even picture that, and the democrats certainly won’t ever fight like that. They blew the 2024 election on purpose because they serve the same billionaire class that the republicans do.
The dems are not going to save us. The only thing that will is a sustained mass movement of working people advocating for their own material interests. But that’s something we’ve been allergic to as a country, due to a century of red-scare propaganda and sheepdog parties like the dems capturing energy on the left and snuffing it out.
Agreed and Also
Remember “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”? The poor and working classes have been groomed to worship the rich. What they cling to, will defend to the death, is the right to be obscenely rich. Someday, they beLIEve, They will be rich, or one of their kids will be, and they’re gonna protect that right. I don’t get it, never have, but there it is. It’s one of our mass hallucinations. Unless and until that is changed, nothing of substance will happen.
