May Day at the Statehouse! For a number of years now there has been an ever-growing public event celebrating May Day on the Statehouse lawn. I went last year and was among 600 or so people having a very stimulating day. This year more than a thousand are expected. Everyone is invited and urged to join in. There is a big parade through the streets of Montpelier, speakers, a childrens tent, free lunch for all and a long line of organizations that are actively working and fighting for a just and sustainable future for Vermont. It’s the largest annual gathering of activists in the state. And its a lot of fun. Activities run from noon to 4 PM. Its a great place to meet people who are doing things. There’s a very strong labor union turnout and usually a good number of legislators coming out to say hello.
There are about 25 people now signed up from Brattleboro and there are still empty seats in cars that can take more. If you’re interested call transportation co-ordinator Spoon Agave at 257-0533 or email spoonagave@yahoo.com or contact the Vermont Workers Center at www.workerscenter.org or matt@workerscenter.org. Registration, which requires only a name and email address is requested, but not required, to get a more accurate count for lunch.
Locally...
Isn’t there also traditionally a May Day on the Common here in town?
Still happening, or is everyone traveling to Montpelier nowadays?
Be damned our grandchildren
The Commons is always good for local recognition. There clearly is a push, though, for a numbers-count on the capitol lawn. More testimony to a growing sense of importance to green.
I wonder if it’s possible that, since modern Americans (er, christians 🙂 have shown a disdain for their future generations that selfish Americans have more concern for their own comfort now, and be damned our grandchildren
