What You Can Do About Homelessness — PUBLIC MEETING
No panel of experts will make speeches. The program will be only your questions and discussion
After the repeal of the “behavior Ordinance, what can be done that doesn’t cost a million dollars.
THINK POSITIVE about the Homeless Crisis. Come together with your neighbors (and homeless people) to discuss
1) What you PERSONALLY can do: start a one-person emergency shelter with “Dispersed Encampment” inspection per selectboard June 6, 2023. Use Converted Space: shelter units in basements, garages, porches, tents, and non-RV motor vehicles. These spaces can be limited to overnight use.
2) What you can boost: Proposals already on the books
RV police substation (the original purpose of BCS’ RVs). No need to quibble about location.
More Unarmed police patrol downtown (the pilot of our SAFE Limited Police Disarmament Plan, as endorsed by the safety committee.)
Police Substation with free rent in BCS headquarters (or any home with extra rooms), as proposed at selectboard January 19, 2021.
3) What you can start: Eminent Domain for State Control of hotels
While hotel owners reap abusive profits, Vermonters are suffering extreme tax hikes, and the housing crisis threatens to bankrupt the state. In 2010 Brattleboro approved the BCS resolution for a legislative study of eminent domain to relieve an economic threat. BCS proposes invoking eminent domain to put hotels and other spaces under government control for emergency use. See the memoranda of law.
