Turning Lidded Boxes | (Weekend Intensive)

September 7, 2024 to September 8, 2024 9:00 am

HatchSpace

22 High Street Brattleboro

Spindle turning is more than rolling pins or table legs! This class will introduce students to the endless creative possibilities of turned-lidded boxes. We’ll start with non-continuous grain boxes before introducing the extra steps needed to create a continuous-grained box. More experienced turners can also branch off into more decorative designs, like a mushroom or an acorn box.

Learn. We’ll review the gouges used for spindle turning and what to look for when sharpening them. Once our tools are sharp and our turning blanks are safely mounted, we’ll discuss the different types of boxes that we can make and the order of operations needed to turn and finish them successfully. End-grain hollowing can be difficult, so we’ll discuss a few techniques and spend some time getting a feel for them before attempting a final project.

Make. You’ll leave with at least one box to hold your tiny treasures or use as a salt or spice container.
