Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is honored to curate this exhibit from Lisa Mackie’s archives of contemporary fine art prints. Betty Wilde-Biasiny (artist and Professor of Visual Art, SUNY/ Empire State College) writes, “The Art of the Chop refers to the chop or seal, the embossed stamp usually pressed into the lower left corner of the print, a symbol of where the piece was printed… Working with one artist per session, Mackie’s philosophy is to be the catalyst for the creative process as well as the consultant for whom artists can rely on to create a print within the most effective technique…and encourage the artist to engage, process, combine, and complete a print that mimics, but does not necessarily replicate their artist project. Her role is more of a translator, sharing her vast knowledge of the language of prints and teaching the artist to ‘speak’ in new ways. …It is this ethos of generosity that has brought so many gifted artists into Mackie’s realm and testimony to why this gathering of, essentially, the workshop’s history is so compelling. As a whole, The Art of the Chop is testament to the artistry, vision, and resilience of Lisa Mackie, artist and master printer, along with her assemblage of some of the most innovative and intense contemporary printmakers of our time. ”
