Basic milling experience (how to operate the table saw, jointer, planer) is required. A refresher will be offered at the beginning of class.

Here is a fabulous chance to develop some new skills while practicing old ones. Learn to make precise and repeatable cuts. Create finger joints and rabbets. Gain experience with planing, ripping and beveling. And learn some widely applicable finishing techniques.

Learn. On Day One, you’ll begin work on the base and sides of your box by planing and ripping your stock to uniform thickness and width. You’ll then cut mortises and tenons before trimming and beveling them for a perfect fit. Finally, you’ll sand, glue and clamp the sides and base while checking for square.

On Day Two, you’ll create the top by creating a raised panel, scoring dados, cutting bevels, rounding and sanding the edges. You’ll finish your box with shellac and paste wax.

Make.  Emerge from this 2-day intensive with a simple and elegant wooden box of your own creation.

Get Certified. This class will cover the safe operation of most major woodworking machines (table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer, router table) and will help prepare you for our certification tests. To use these machines independently, you must be a member and pass one or more certification tests. For more information and to schedule a testing session, please contact info@hatchspace.org.
