There are many ways to be snookered, manipulated, tricked and even bullied into becoming a victim on the internet, as well as through regular mail, phone, etc. People tricking others into doing things against their better interests is not a new phenomenon, but the ways that can happen has changed in recent times. It helps us all to have us all be more aware, more informed, and more skeptical of seemingly innocent inquiries.
Join Steve West of Fearless Computing on Tuesday, November 1st at 7pm. Steve will cover commonly discussed threats like viruses, and go deeper into spyware, ransomware and other kinds of electronic pests that can go far beyond merely annoying and into dangerous. In addition, we’ll cover phone scams preying on those with limited understanding of computers, like calls from non-existent entities like “Windows Tech Support” (pro tip: no such thing). He’ll discuss simple ways to increase your safety on your computer and while surfing the web, and even ergonomics and body posture while using your computer.
Once all that is covered, there will be plenty of time for questions from the group, so please come prepared with any you may have regarding how to be a healthy and safe computer user.
Steve West has been operating Fearless Computing in the greater Brattleboro area since 2000, doing on-site repairs for local folks and businesses. This presentation is a partnership between Putney Public Library and Putney Cares.
Putney Library is located at 55 Main Street in Putney, VT. This program is free and open to the public.
