Song for Homeless People in Vermont

(Town Meeting Day is March 4th, will homeless people attend?)

Song for Homeless People in Vermont, by Cris Ericson (C)(P) 2025

I never believed you would be sleeping
on a park bench at night
but you lost your job and couldn’t pay rent
and shelter beds were full that night.

“I never believed you would be sleeping
on a park bench at night
but you lost your job and couldn’t pay rent
and shelter beds were full that night.
A ragged puppy begged you to hold him,
shivering, snuggling tight till morning light.
Other homeless people showed you to a day shelter,
sandwiches were handed out,
you gave your apple to a small girl.
The world of the homeless in Vermont fell below zero,
snow falling down so hard covered up your face.
Forget your name, forget your face,
forget the way we once embraced.
When you die you go back where you came from,
that’s the only answer I know,
from a vanishing point in the distance
to a place without time in the snow.”
