Twilight Music continues its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 28 with the Julian Gerstin Sextet performing original jazz influenced by rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Green Mountain Well, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney area businesses and organizations. The Julian Gerstin Sextet features Caribbean drums, Balkan rhythms, jazz melodies and a world of imagination. A veteran of many African, Latin and jazz bands, percussionist/composer Gerstin studied and performed traditional music in Martinique for two years, and his experiences there form the basis of much of the sextet’s music. In addition to working in a wide range of musical genres, he has published extensively in ethnomusicological journals. Anna Patton (clarinet) performs with the band Elixir for contradances, and works extensively in Bulgarian music, teaching at clinics across the US. Don Anderson (trumpet) has performed with the Latin big band Creación, Vermont Jazz Center Big Band and many other ensembles. Eugene Uman (piano) has performed with notables such as Sonny Fortune, Sheila Jordan, Bobby Sanabria and Bo Diddley. He is Executive/Artistic Director of the Vermont Jazz Center, and teaches piano at Amherst College. Wes Brown (bass) has worked extensively with jazz luminaries from Earl “Fatha” Hines to Wadada Leo Smith and Fred Ho’s Afro-Asian Ensemble. Ben James (drums) has worked with John Tchicai, Olatunji, Green Mountain Mambo and many others.
