Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of traditional Celtic and folk music from Quebec, Nova Scotia and New England by Quebec-based trio Genticorum and fiddler/singer Zoe Darrow at Next Stage on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm.
Over the past 18 years, Quebec-based Genticorum has become a fixture on the international world, trad, folk and Celtic music circuit, releasing six albums and performing over 800 concerts in Canada, the US and Europe. Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, the energetic and original ‘power trio’ also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle, flute and accordion work, vocal harmonies, foot percussion and guitar accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, energy and sense of humor make them a supreme crowd pleaser.
Genticorum is fiddler, singer and arranger Pascal Gemme, guitarist Yann Falquet and flautist, accordionist and pianist Nicholas Williams. A leading light in Quebec’s traditional music scene, Pascal has played, collected and recorded music from all over Quebec, but is known as much for his original compositions as his fine interpretation of traditional tunes. With a Bachelor’s degree in jazz, Yann has developed a personal guitar style for Québec folk music, inspired by the playing of the accompanists of different cultures (Brittany, Scandinavia, Ireland, North America). Nicholas’ rhythmic yet nuanced style of flute playing draws from Irish and Scottish traditions, as well as from his studies of world and classical North Indian music.

Fiddler and singer Zoe Darrow is a musician of rare intensity and expressive range who grew up playing Cape Breton and other Celtic music on a sheep farm in Blandford, MA, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in anthropology and music. She released her first recording in 2001 at the age of 12, with her band the Fiddleheads. The Valley Advocate named them “Best Celtic Band” in 2007, and Celtic Heritage Magazine acclaimed Zoe as an artist “destined to add savory spice to the global mix.” She has toured and recorded with the likes of Tony Trischka, Tim Eriksen and Peter Irvine.
