Songcrafters Brenna Sahatjian and Adhamh Roland play at The Root October 27
Folk artists Adhamh Roland from Western, MA and Brenna Sahatjian from Portland, OR are joining forces for a Northeastern US tour this fall, rolling through Brattleboro on October 27. Roland and Sahatjian performed together for several years as part of the Riotfolk Collective, a national collective of folksinger, activists and organizers.
Roland hails from St. Louis, Missouri where he began his music career belting anti-capitalist labor songs and Ani DiFranco covers as a street performer at the age of thirteen. Roland has released six albums, scored film and theater performances, toured and created with Benchpress Burlesque and The Tranny Roadshow, and was featured in the 2009 documentary “Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Musical Performance.” Using home made foot percussion pedals, a vocal harmonizer, but mostly his bare voice and guitar, Roland brings a captivating vulnerability to his live sets.
Empirical, released October 21st, 2016, is influenced by “Buddhist practice, heartbreak on interpersonal and collective levels, a disdain of meritocracy and a belief in something better” says Roland. The album encompasses percussive, bluesy guitar riffs, lucid finger picked ballads, and indie-folk tunes with Roland’s defining warble.
Over the years Brenna Sahatjian has played in many musical projects on both cello, mountain dulcimer, and guitar, and is currently a member of Portland bands Strangeweather and Aradia. Her solo work utilizes live looping, and her distinctive folk songs blend guitar and cello. The result is a dreamy, yet dynamic, sonic texture.
The Ruby, released December 21, 2015, is Sahatjian’s latest solo recording effort. It combines ethereal cello melodies with hard hitting, personal songwriting. With musical styles ranging from folk to grunge, The Ruby makes plain Sahatjian’s roots in what Tuscon Weekly called, “lo-fi 90’s nostaligia.”
Joining this show is Little Mountain, a self-described, “Brattlebabe witch surprise.”
The Root is located at 28 Williams St. in Brattelboro, VT. The show runs from 7-10pm, and is all ages.
