Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Jeremy Scahill have launched The Intercept, the first ‘digital magazine’ to be published by First Look Media. Here’s the link:
https://firstlook.org/theintercept/
Greenwald & Scahill’s first article is “The NSA’s Secret Role in the U.S. Assassination Program” and is based on first-hand accounts from a ‘former drone operator’ as well as previously unreleased Snowden documents.
Personally, I am thrilled that they signed up blogger Marcy Wheeler to do her document forensic magic as a consultant. She’ll continue blogging at Emptywheel.
Greenwald apparently will resume his regular column, and The Intercept also will feature a comment section.
HOORAY for sunlight!!
"We Track ’Em, You Whack ’Em"
I wish there was a way to create “critical mass” readership for sites looking out for our best interest (or at least I like to think they are).
One of the problems with the ubiquitous nature of the WWW is the immense glut of blogs and stories within a dizzying array of millions of sites.
We’d need the data transfer and storage capabilities of the NSA itself to filter it all down to a manageable stream of information. Nevertheless, it’s what we have to work with and it would be unthinkable to be without the web and sites like this one.
They'll be read.
Greenwald, Scahill and others have an audience – worldwide. There will be no shortage of readers for this project.
The trick will be to share what we learn there with people who don’t follow news.
Part of the announcement was that this is just one of many digital magazines the group plans to author. This media empire is just getting going.
On Democracy Now
I heard these guys talking on Monday’s Democracy Now (http://www.democracynow.org/2014/2/10/defying_threats_to_journalism_jeremy_scahill). This is a very important project. Thanks for the link, Nan. I’m going to bookmark it.
