Alexander Turner Life Story A Slave (1845- 1923)
Naima Wade will present a living history presentation on Thursday, January 16, 7:00 PM, in the library’s main room, which retells the Life Story of Alexander Turner (1845- 1923). Turner was enslaved on a Virginia plantation, and a fugitive who fought in the Civil War and eventually ended up in Vermont establishing a homestead. Wade’s goal is make sure that the Underground Railroad sites in southern Vermont are documented and preserved for posterity.

Currently Naima is the president and lead consultant of Wade Consulting Teacher Services, LLC. She is a poet, writer, performance artist, cultural worker, and non-profit manager, who has taught and performed around the globe. Her work and passion focuses on racial reconciliation, and grassroots environmental and conservation awareness.
Naima first heard about Daisy Turner in 1968 while a student at Lyndon State College, in VT. In 1999 Naima began writing and performing Daisy Turner’s life story. She has traveled throughout New England as a Speaker/ presenter moving audiences aged 4-100 with her works of the Daisy Turner story, through Vermont Humanities, Interfaith communities, Historical Societies, Museums and schools. With a grant received from the Vermont Humanities Council, Naima placed a copy of the book Daisy and the Doll in all Windham County School Libraries, and traveled throughout West Africa to research the roots of the Turner family. She has continued to research and write about the Turner Family, and is currently engaged with the National Parks Services, Underground Railroad Network To Freedom Program with regard to the Turner Family story, something we’ll all hear more about after the performance.
