Each faces life threatening situations demanding courage, faith, and resilience if the couple is ever to see each other again. The event is free and open to the public.
Vermont author Tereska Buko and Brattleboro artist Lerna will be speaking about Ms. Buko’s newly published book, The General’s Barber and the Seamstress: A Polish Love Story (Red Barn Books of Vermont).
Tereska Buko, a former resident of Marlboro and Brattleboro and graduate of the School for International Training, retells the World War II story of her Polish parents. When Hitler invades Poland in 1939, her parents – married merely a year, are catapulted into a sudden and heart-wrenching seven year separation and continue to survive separately without knowing the fate of the other. Each faces life threatening situations demanding courage, faith, and resilience if the couple is ever to see each other again. Each chapter is artfully illustrated with pen and ink sketches by Lerna. There will be copies available for purchase as well as a question and answer period.
Tereska Józefa Buko grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut surrounded by a culture of Polish postwar immigrants and has retained a deep love of her heritage. The General’s Barber and the Seamstress is a tribute to her parents.
