On November 23rd and 24th at 7:30 pm When I Put on Your Glove by Shoshana Bass will play the stage at Sandglass Theater in Putney. Last year Eric Bass took Autumn Portraits to the Lizé International Puppet Festival in Taiwan then returned to Putney to play this signature piece at Sandglass Theater for the last time. This year Shoshana will bring her adaptation of the work in When I Put on Your Glove to the festival in Taiwan and return to play on the Sandglass stage during the Putney Craft Tour weekend. When I Put On Your Glove is a puppetry, dance and spoken word piece that explores a daughter’s relationship to her father’s work building upon a premise that puppets are containers of memory. In it, a daughter explores what it means for her to slip into her father’s art – and not just the form, but the actual pieces. This work addresses universal questions of belonging, childhood, fear of loss, death and the complicated nature of navigating generational artistic legacy.
Inspired by Sandglass Theater’s guests at the Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival who brought new ideas of access to our community, Shoshana will offer a “Touch Tour” for those who benefit from a closer interaction with the puppets and scenery. The touch tour consists of verbal descriptions of the set and an opportunity to feel the fixtures, fittings and textures of the scenery, and to meet Shoshana who will describe her character and costume, and answer any questions that you might have. Sandglass will also be providing “social stories” for audience members that want preparation and a preview of what the experience of attending the theater will be like. You can reserve a space in the touch tour or receive the social story by request at info@sandglasstheater.org.
Thanksgiving weekend is a big cultural draw to Putney, Vermont thanks to the collaboration of The Putney Craft Tour, Next Stage Arts Project and Sandglass Theater that have joined forces for the last four years to present a Thanksgiving Weekend of the Arts dubbed “Putney Craft Tour’s Craft, Culinary and Performance Weekend”. Local restaurants offer Putney Craft Tour specials and the craft tour includes wine and cheese tastings as well as demos at the studios. The show at Sandglass Theater can be paired with a day touring the Putney Craft Tour on Thanksgiving Weekend (Nov. 24, 25 and 26 10am-5pm each day). Named a Top Ten Winter event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, the tour also is helping to fight hunger in the community. The tour is partnering with the Putney Food shelf by using art to support food for those who are in need. Each of the 26 studios on the Putney Craft Tour will showcase an object for sale with the proceeds going to the Foodshelf. Part of the fun is meandering through the beautiful Vermont countryside, following the map to find these prominent craftspeople and view the works where they are conceived and created. Visitors may start at The Gleanery Restaurant, 133 Main Street, Putney or the Putney General Store for info, maps, and preview exhibitions of the artisans’ works, and then finish of the evening with at Sandglass Theater.
