West Brattleboro, Vt. — The Arts Committee of All Souls Church is hosting an opening reception for “A Mix of Oil and Water,” an exhibit of oils and watercolors by John Dimick of Guilford, on Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. Three dozen works are featured, primarily landscape paintings and prints of scenes in the surrounding region. Several studies of downtown Brattleboro capture the town from unusual vantage points, such as along the railroad tracks. A few of the featured works are pairings of the same scene in both mediums to allow viewers an interesting comparison of Dimick’s creative techniques.
John was a history major at UVM with an art minor in stone lithography. He soon returned to his alma mater to earn a teaching certificate in special education and industrial arts. “I have enjoyed drawing, both free sketching and technical drawing, all of my life, and recently rediscovered my paint brushes,” he shares in his bio. After a long career as a special educator and industrial arts and technology instructor (as well as a coach), John has immersed himself in art since retiring in 2009.
He was one of the artists featured recently in an All Souls exhibit by members of the Saxtons River Art Guild. “I split my time painting with the Brush & Palette Painters, a group of watercolor painters at the Gibson-Aiken Center in Brattleboro, and with the Stone Soup Painters, a program of the River Gallery School under the direction of Marilyn Allen.” He is currently co-president of the Arts Council of Windham County.
Please stop in on Saturday afternoon to chat with Dimick about his creative process, as well as enjoy a bountiful table of savory and sweet refreshments. All Souls Church, also known as West Village Meeting House, is at 29 South St. in West Brattleboro, across from the village green and fire station. Head up the wooded driveway to a large parking area by the building.
Regular gallery hours are 9 to 2 on Tues-Wed-Thurs, as well as during worship services and other public events in the building. Appointments for other hours are also possible. For further information, call the office at 802-254-9377.
