Brattleboro Announces Free Parking for Last Two Weekends of 2024

The Town of Brattleboro is offering free parking downtown during the final two weekends of the year. Parking will be free on Dec. 20, 21 and 22, 2024, and again on Dec. 27, 28 and 29 to coincide with the busy holiday season.

Since launching the new parking system in late November, Town staff have been making improvements to it based on public feedback. Several upgrades are currently in development, including additional signage, step-by-step instructions displayed on the sides of the parking kiosks, revisions to the parking zone/kiosk map, and the creation of a “how-to” video that will guide drivers through the three parking methods available downtown.

Town staff appreciate everyone’s patience as they continue to refine the new parking system.

  • More signs not the answer.

What would be really helpful would be little signs mounted on poles next to each space, maybe with a way to put coins in, as long as you are standing there reading the little sign. They could have little timers, and maybe a light to indicate if time had run out. : )

    ….

More signs are not the answer. Brattleboro is filled with visual clutter already. Removing other signs would help more.

The how-to video will be of no help to someone visiting from somewhere else.

Revisions to the system while implementing the system will add to confusion for a while. They might help eventually, but this is a major change. Everyone was used to meters and kiosks with tickets, and it worked well for people parking.

I’d sell the parking garage and have free parking with time limits in town. Eliminate the parking fund. Move parking enforcement under policing. Encourage people to come to town and spend money to collect the 1% rather than parking fees. Continue to make some money on parking violations (ie, parking too long or in a wrong spot.)

  • Just Don't Pay

I haven’t paid for parking downtown since the intention to switch to the new meters was announced earlier this year. No tickets so far! The increased prices and no more free Sundays, all pushed out with almost no discussion or consideration of other options, was the last straw.

We know from the limited “debate” around the recent changes that the current number of metermaids was not enough to cover the whole downtown 6 days a week. Now that it’s 7 days, coverage is even worse.

It’s been long enough that if I do get a ticket now it will be a bunch cheaper than paying at the meters. Just don’t pay.
