BRIDGE OPENING INFORMATION
Brattleboro-Hinsdale
BF A004(152)
The new bridge for New Hampshire/Vermont Route 119 will open to motor vehicle traffic around 2:00 p.m. today!
Due to inclement weather forecasted for tomorrow, the bridge is scheduled to be open by 2:00 p.m. today. Crews are currently working on eradicating the permanent pavement markings that need to be removed and re-striping on the New Hampshire side.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
The new traffic pattern will be active in Brattleboro today. Watch for message boards throughout the area indicating the new traffic pattern is active. Barricades will be set up on Bridge Street to encourage local traffic only. Eastbound travelers to VT/NH 119 will need to turn onto Vermont Route 142 (Vernon Street) and access the new bridge at the new signalized intersection. Westbound traffic on VT/NH 119 will need to turn onto VT 142 north to proceed to U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street).
Pedestrian traffic should continue to utilize the existing accommodations on the truss bridges. The new bridge will remain closed to pedestrians until the Spring of 2025 due to continued contractor operations within the work zone.
Work zones remain active along VT 142, VT/NH 119, and on adjacent properties and roads to the new bridge. Please drive with care.
LOCATION:
The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.
The project completion date was changed from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025. Motor vehicle traffic is scheduled to be on the new bridge December 2024 and pedestrian traffic Spring 2025.
PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025

1857 “Hinsdale Bridge. This structure is now completed. It was built by Dexter Moore of Newfane, in a manner creditable to himself and satisfactory to the stockholders. The expense of construction including the pier and abutment was not far from $8500.”
Nice timing, modern bridge! (Though at $61.2 million, the cost is a bit more.)
Coincidence?
That’s quite the synchronization…unless it was intentional…
