Construction Update
Brattleboro-Hinsdale
BF A004(152)
DATE: Thursday, October 10, 2024
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
The contractor on this project has received permission to work the holiday, Monday, October 14, 2024. There should be minimal impact on traffic.
Crews may be accessing the shoulders along approach routes adjacent to the new Vermont Route 142 and Vermont/New Hampshire Route 119 intersection for sign installation and motorists should watch for uniformed traffic officers facilitating this operation.
One-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers are expected on VT 142 as crews build the intersection for the new bridge. Motorists should watch for increased construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone at all locations and for concrete trucks working near the roadway.
Paving the second layer of asphalt on NH/VT 119 new bridge.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:
Concrete for the last moment slab was placed last week. Concrete will still be needed for some sign bases and sidewalk work, so concrete trucks will still be using local routes to reach the construction site when needed, and from time to time their proximity to a traveled road may require alternating one lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
The bridge was paved this week. Work on the Vermont approach to the bridge is to be completed this week. Paving there is scheduled to resume Monday, October 14, and should take two days. Final striping of VT 142 and the bridge is set for Thursday, October 17th. The reconfiguration of VT/NH 119 will require some temporary pavement markings at a later date when the bridge is ready to be opened to traffic.
Crews continue to take advantage of the weather and strip, patch (if needed), and waterproof exposed concrete as clean-up continues. This includes stripping of overhang forms. Removal of the temporary trestle, with its intermittent noise from the diesel hammer, continues. Plans for the restoration of the drainage that was disturbed for the construction of Pier 1 on the Barrows and Fisher property are still being finalized. Crews may be at this location using man-lifts to remove forms from the underside of the bridge.
Sign crews may begin sign installation shortly, and will be occupying the shoulders at a variety of locations both at the bridge and along the approach routes to it.
The last moment slab cures. Rail then must be installed and forms and temporary walkways need to be removed.
LOCATION:
The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.
Unanticipated delays at a couple of the piers have adjusted the project completion date from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025.
PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025
