Construction Update
Brattleboro-Hinsdale
BF A004(152)
DATE: Thursday, October 3, 2024
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
Crews will be accessing the shoulders along approach routes adjacent to the new Vermont Route 142 and Vermont/New Hampshire Route 119 intersection for sign installation and motorists should watch for uniformed traffic officers facilitating this operation.
One-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers may be expected on VT 142 as they build the intersection for the new bridge. Motorists should watch for increased construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone at all locations and for concrete trucks working near the roadway.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:
Concrete for two of the three remaining moment slabs was placed this week, and the last is set to be placed Friday, October 4th. This is the last structural concrete needed for the project! Concrete will still be needed for some sign bases and sidewalk work, so concrete trucks will still be using local routes to reach the construction site when needed, and from time to time their proximity to a traveled road may require alternating one lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
The crew placing the waterproof membrane on the bridge deck is completing their work this week. Paving will begin Tuesday, October 8th, with a 1” layer of Bridge Base pavement followed by the 1 ½” bridge wearing course of asphalt.
Crews continue to take advantage of the weather and strip, patch (if needed), and waterproof exposed concrete as clean-up continues. This includes stripping of overhang forms.
Removal of the temporary trestle, with its intermittent noise from the diesel hammer, continues.
Work on restoring the drainage that was disturbed for the construction of Pier 1 on the Barrows and Fisher property may begin next week. Other crews may also be at this location using man-lifts to remove forms from the underside of the bridge.
The sign contractor will do a site visit this week to plan installation of the permanent signs for the bridge and the many approach routes. Crews may begin sign installation next week, and will be occupying the shoulders at a variety of locations in the area to do that work.
LOCATION:
The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.
Unanticipated delays at a couple of the piers have adjusted the project completion date from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025.
PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025
