I found myself standing in the upstairs window, watching the rain fall in the meadow outside and humming “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Clearly, I thought, I want to ride away on a sunshiny day in search of adventure. Realizing that wasn’t likely, I continued to watch the rain as it fell, gradually noticing the budding silver maple just outside the window.
Glistening silver droplets adorned every twig, hanging there like Christmas lights, some getting larger as more rain fell, until here and there a big drop of rain would roll down a twig to the growing droplet below, and plop! down it would fall. Soon I was seeing waves of them, dropping like Busby Berkeley swimmers into a pool. A ballet of rain, choreographed by chance.
My first and only reaction was to exclaim out loud: That’s so cool! Because it was, but normally, I wouldn’t see it, being consumed with thinking about the rain.
some of the lyrics
“….You’re sleek as a thoroughbred.
You’re seats are a feather bed.
You’ll turn everybody’s head today.
We’ll glide on our motor trip
With pride in our ownership
The envy of all we survey.
Oh Chitty You Chitty
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
We love you.
And Chitty, in Chitty
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang what we’ll do.
Near Chitty, far Chitty, in our motor car Oh what a happy time we’ll spend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend….”
