Case counts aren’t everything and don’t always tell the full story. It’s good to have some context. Read this if you enjoy math and science: “Coronavirus case counts are meaningless” by Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/coronavirus-case-counts-are-meaningless/

The quick summary – conclusions drawn really depend on testing. An area with robust testing is different than an area with a sudden one-time increase in testing, and so on. An area might show a drop in cases for a variety of reasons and one could be the hospital is overloaded.

Lesson – pay attention to hospital strain, number of tests done, and so on as you look at case counts.

  • The State Now Has Current Activity By Town, and, Let's Compare Towns

It took some time, but the Vermont Department of Health now shares on its website the number of COVID cases by town. You can view it here: https://www.healthvermont.gov/response/coronavirus-covid-19/current-activity-vermont#town

The VTDigger story on it is here: https://www.healthvermont.gov/response/coronavirus-covid-19/current-activity-vermont#town

One thing I find intriguing isn’t the number of cases per town, but the percentages. Compare Brattleboro, which has 16 confirmed cases, to Vernon, which has 7.

When you compare the population of each town, though, the numbers are alarming. In Brattleboro, the confirmed illness rate is 1.37 per 1,000 people. Vernon’s is almost triple: 3.13 per 1,000 people.

Why is that? I would assume Brattleboro would have a higher percentage of confirmed sick people because Brattleboro is more densely populated. Does Vernon have more people living in homes together, and Brattleboro has more people living alone, so the illness is spreading that way? Are Vernonites higher-risk for other reasons? Are they older? Is it because of their proximity to Franklin County, MA, which has many more confirmed positive cases than Windham County?

I’m no epidemiologist. Clearly. I’m also not a public health expert. Are you? If so, please chime in.

*Due to duplicate entry of some tests over the last two days, the Total Tests Conducted at BMH was adjusted on 4/29/2020 to remove the duplicates.

That concludes the April 2020 COVID-19 dashboard report.

Looking at the numbers, Vermont did fairly well in keeping numbers in check. Hospitals didn’t overflow; social distancing and quick shut down worked. Our curves look pretty good at the moment. New cases are pretty low. But there are new cases…and people move around from state to state.

The Burlington area had the highest numbers, but Windham County has higher numbers than most Vermont counties.

  • Thanks Chris

It’s not only interesting and useful to see the numbers, it’s hopeful that we aren’t being as careless as people elsewhere.

    These bits of history matter.

  • Daily Postings Yes

Chris I like your format etc better than others so I am pleased if you continue into May. The only thing you don;t seem to have is # of new cases daily but I find since you leave all the past reports up that it’s an easy subtraction exercise to subtract today’s total from yesterday’s. D

  • May

Thank you Chris for doing this, and considering to continue in May
    Appreciated
