I’ve faced that “ultimatum” since at least 1968. What else is new? I thought it began with Ken Kesey “You’re either on the bus or off the bus” and then worked its way through college dorms around the country. But I’m not surprised that Ghengis Khan or Jesus pre-dated him. In my dorm I had two card carrying communists living across the hall from me. Thankfully their recruitment methods were pretty benign, but they made sure I knew that I was both petty and bourgeois. One of them threw a newly published comic book a group of us made into one fellow’s face yelling “THIS IS BOURGEOIS TRASH!” And then I moved to Putney. But that’s another story altogether. ;o)
But this is the very “lock” of our politics now, both left or right hardly matters. Both sides are saying “you’re either with us or against us” to the other side. Is it any wonder that it’s evolved to a strongman like Trump thinking he has the key to “unlocking” it?
