By Brandon Carter – 01/04/18 06:44 PM EST

“The Vermont House passed a bill Thursday night to legalize recreational possession of marijuana…”
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded a Department of Justice policy on legal marijuana.”…
…”allow adults over the age of 21 to grow and possess small amounts of legal marijuana beginning in July.”;;;
…”State Senate still needs to approve the measure”… “Vermont Governor Phil Scott (R) has signaled that he will sign the bill.”…Link

  • a bit more...

“It would allow for adults to possess under an ounce of marijuana, and the growth of two mature or four immature pot plants.” says WCAX.

Senate expected to approve and governor expected to sign this.

Vermont would be the first state to legalize marijuana via its state legislature.

I don’t see where we get the big tax revenues, though. Perhaps a missed opportunity.

  • Will US Att. Gen. Arrest VT Gov. Scott for "aiding & abetting"?

Will the State of Vermont become absolutely famous
when Governor Phil Scott and the entire Vermont
    State Legislature, Representatives and Senators
    VOTE TO MAKE MARIJUANA LAWFUL,
and then immediately after the Bill signing,
they are all herded onto a federal prison bus
and incarcerated awaiting trial with massive
and unaffordable million dollar bail requirements
all because they AIDED AND ABETTED
    VIOLATIONS OF FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS?

Can we get the cameras and video cameras ready
and use the film footage to promote lawful protests
without being charged with inciting a riot?

    Washington Post
“…Vermont legislators vote to legalize marijuana
just hours after Sessions sets stage for a crackdown.
    … Republican governor, Phil Scott…
has signaled he’d sign it…. it would make
    Vermont the first state to
legalize recreational marijuana through the legislature,
rather than via a statewide ballot initiative….”

But, WILL THERE BE prosecutions against all members
of the Vermont Legislature, who voted to legalize
recreational marijuana, and Governor Phil Scott
if he signs the new upcoming Bill, for aiding or abetting
or assisting in the violation of a federal law?
“Whoever commits an offense against the United
States or aids, abets, counsels, commands,
    induces or procures its commission,
    is punishable as a principal.” 18. U.S.C. §§ 2

    https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2
    18 U.S. Code § 2 – Principals
    (a) Whoever commits an offense against the United States
or aids, abets, counsels, commands, induces
or procures its commission, is punishable as a principal.
    (b) Whoever willfully causes an act to be done
which if directly performed by him or another
would be an offense against the United States,
    is punishable as a principal.

I want to REMIND YOU OF THE FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS because
US Attorney General JEFF SESSIONS plans to enforce federal
marijuana laws in states which have chosen to make marijuana lawful.
That means that even when “recrerational” marijuana
    becomes legal under state law
the federal drug enforcement agency can come arrest you!

…”after announcing a change in policy that could lead to a federal crackdown on marijuana users and sellers even in states where pot prohibition has been ended, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions sparked a bipartisan outcry.”…” new DOJ policy… prosecutors in states where pot is no longer banned by state law are given wide leeway in deciding when and whether to prosecute violations of federal marijuana statutes.”…

  • Keebler Elf's Evil Cousin

OMG! How many racist, lying, child molesting politicians can Alabama can pump out? Could they try any harder to keep their #1 spot on the worst state in the USA? https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/11/americas-10-worst-states-to-live-in-2017.html

Seriously, Jeff Sessions is just the worst. Needs to apologize to leprechauns for giving them a bad name. We’d be better off with the leprechaun from the 1993 horror movie as our AG. If we only took a cue from amusement parks and one of those “you must be this tall to run the Justice Department” signs, would never have had to deal with the little weasel.

  • In response to the wonderful comment by TechFan!

Dear TechFan, I feel your anger, and so many people feel exactly the same way you do. There is a time and a place for properly expressed politically correct anger; and as you have pointed the way here, you can see others are expressing their anger at United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions, although for a variety of reasons. Whatever reasons bring members of the United States Congress to call for the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions
    are fine by me.

Today in the news I see:

change. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock worries United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions move on the Cole
Memo will endanger marijuana business investment, city tax revenue and
release more cash into the streets. He joins others in criticizing Sessions…

United States Attorney General Sessions is a buzz kill for pot stocks…

    Jan. 6, 2018 – CNNMoney
GW and other pot stocks are feeling the pain after U.S. Attorney General
Jeff Sessions rescinded the Cole memo.

This goes on and on in the news today, search http://news.google.com for “Jeff Sessions” and you can see that the majority of people, who write stories or post comments on the internet, are entirely fed up with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and the disgust is bi-partisan.

  • another complaint against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Here’s another complaint against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions,
on an entirely different subject from marijuana. This complaint filed against United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions involves alleged wrongful actions involving the federal bureau of land management and rancher’s rights.

equal protection and other rights under the Constitution
    and the law in general.”

  • BLAME VERMONT CONGRESSMEN FOR NOT REPEALING MARIJUANA LAWS!

BLAME VERMONT CONGRESSMEN, U.S. SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY, U.S. SENAT0R BERNIE SANDERS, U.S. CONGRESSMAN PETER WELCH, FOR NOT DOING EVERYTHING THEY POSSIBLY COULD TO REPEAL ALL FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS WHILE PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS IN OFFICE AND THE DEMOCRATS HAD ENOUGH PERSUASION AND CONTROL TO DO WHAT THEY WANTED TO!

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON UNITED STATES SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY, UNITED STATES BERNIE SANDERS AND UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES – U.S. CONGRESSMAN PETER WELCH, FOR NOT SAVING VERMONTERS WHEN THEY COULD HAVE FROM THIS OVEWHELMING THREAT OF PERSECUTION AND PROSECUTION UNDER MANY FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS!

THINK ABOUT IT, U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF SESSIONS SWORE AN OATH TO UPHOLD THE FEDERAL LAWS. WHO WROTE THOSE FEDERAL LAWS? WHO FAILED TO REPEAL THE FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS?

BLAME THE VERMONT CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION FOR NOT DOING WHAT THEY COULD WHEN THEY COULD HAVE SUCCEEDED!

    • Congress Sucks

I agree, congress should be doing much more to address an issue that should have been dealt with long ago. I recently messaged Senator Leahy about Sessions repealing the Cole Memorandum that protected those following their state laws by eliminating federal funding for prosecuting against state wishes. I think he is one of the good guys overall, but congress is not doing enough in general. This was his reply:

Thank you for contacting me about protecting state medical marijuana programs. I appreciate your interest in this.

In July 2017, I offered an amendment during the Committee Markup of the Fiscal Year 2018 (FY18) Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) bill that would prohibit the Justice Department from interfering with states – including Vermont – that have medical marijuana laws. The full Senate Appropriations Committee approved this measure by voice vote. The amendment does not prevent federal law enforcement from investigating individuals or medical marijuana dispensaries that are not in compliance with state laws.

This amendment has passed each year since 2014, winning by greater margins each year. The amendment currently applies to 46 states and the District of Columbia. However, the House Rules Committee blocked the medical marijuana amendment from the floor during consideration of the Commerce, Justice, and Science portion of the spending package that the House passed last fall.

As the House and Senate have yet to pass a complete spending package for FY18, we do not yet know whether my amendment will be included for the remainder of the fiscal year. Please know that as Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight to have this amendment included in the current spending package, as well as future appropriations bills.

Again, thank you for reaching out. Please keep in touch.

      Sincerely,

      PATRICK LEAHY
      United States Senator

—in response to his reply I emailed him a personalized response, but I think it will take more people contacting him to get it through his head things need to change. I tried to be respectful as possible and give him the benefit of the doubt, although I could have been a bit harsher. This was my reply:

Please do. I truly appreciate having you and Bernie fighting for the people, not just corporate interests and lobbyist. Big pharm, alcohol, police & prison unions, and the typical racist backwards Alabama elf Jess Sessions are pure evil, and I will always and only vote for politicians with integrity like yourself. You both represent Vermont well. Please keep up the good work and continue the right thing, as long as you stand up to the evil elf and special interest groups, at least on the issue of protecting law abiding medical marijuana patients, you will always have my vote. The tide of public opinion has turned, especially in more enlightened areas like the northeast, and the rest of the politicians need to catch up with the times. This is looonnnggg overdue.

  • Senate joins House

The Vermont Senate just passed the same bill, sending it to the Governor, who is expected to sign it.
