Action Taken: At 6:50am Brattleboro Central Dispatch received a call reporting smoke coming from the roof at 572 – 574 South Main St. Engine 1, Engine 4 and Rescue 2 responded on a 1st alarm assignment. At 6:55 Brattleboro Police arrived on the scene and reported smoke showing from the roof and eve area of #574. BFD Captain Ron Hubbard, the officer in charge on Engine 1, ordered a 2nd alarm be struck while enroute due to the PD report.

Upon arrival of Engine 1 at 6:57 they reported a working fire on the second floor. Tenants in the building told fire crews that everyone was out. Hose lines were stretched and an attack was made on the fire. At 7:05 interior crews reported the fire had been knocked down on the 2nd floor but had extension into the attic and were making their way there.

As more personnel arrived crews were assigned to both sides of the duplex structure to do a search for occupants and a hose line was stretched to the upper floors of #572 to cut off any fire that was extending that way. The remaining fire in the attic was extinguished with no extension into #572 and the incident was declared under control at 7:37am.

There were no injuries and one cat was removed by firefighters from the fire apartment unharmed. Brattleboro was assisted at the scene by Putney and Keene Fire Departments as well as Rescue Inc, Brattleboro Police, Brattleboro Dept of Public Works, Brattleboro Utilities Division and Green Mountain Power. #574 received extensive fire, smoke and water damage while #572 received some smoke damage.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the BFD Investigation Team and does not appear to be suspicious. There were six occupants between the two apartments, including two young children. They all are staying with friends or relatives as the building is uninhabitable. All Brattleboro units were back in service at 11:00 am.
