The Fall 2016 issue of the Oberlin alumni magazine has a feature that begins by talking about former students meeting in Brattleboro to discuss their craft. What is their craft? Circus arts!
Terry Crane, Erica Rubenstein, and Sam Payne are all mentioned in conjunction with contempoprary circus performing at the New England Center for Circus Arts. Payne lives in the area, and the others toured through with their circus arts show.
The story talks of alumni all over the country performing, forming circus schools, and staying on touch with one another, and points out that some places, Brattleboro included, are becoming known as centers for circus arts.
One challenege that perhaps Brattleboro can find a way to solve – there are no degree programs for the circus profession. Maybe we can pioneer something?
Hats of to NECCA, again.
no need to run away
Bumper sticker:
“Brattleboro, where children don’t run away
and join the circus – their parents drive them.”

That’s a good one!
I do like that our town is known for circus arts. There’s something mysterious and romantic and gritty about the circus — surreality with a touch of danger that gives us a thrill.
