In 1805, U.S. Marines and Berber mercenaries attacked the Tripolitan port city of Derna. The Marines and Berbers were on a mission to depose Yusuf Karamanli, the ruler of Tripoli. (Pirates from the Barbary States were seizing American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom).
Tripoli is the capital city and the largest city of Libya.
