Very cool
Those are very cool. Four photos of the Exit 3 intersection prior to 91, with no roundabout, and really big, easy-to-read signs to point you in the right direction. And HoJo’s…
roundabout not so old
I believe the roundabout was built in the mid 90’s. That intersection was pretty much the same as in these pictures when I started visiting Brattleboro in 1984, but by then there were traffic lights.
Maybe Chris can dig something
Maybe Chris can dig something up in the newspaper archives? I love the older items so much, but some of the things that happened in the 20th century are interesting too.
When copyright laws change, we can learn about post 1920.
I’d love to take on the 20th century, but US Copyright laws make that hard. The digitized newspaper project stops at 1922 for the Brattleboro Phoenix, alas.
(if the original copyright laws were in effect, we’d be seeing public domain films, books, news, recordings, and so on into the late 50’s by now, but DisneyCorp has a way of extending the period whenever Mickey is about to enter public domain. Nearly a century of culture is locked up and out of reach.)
I’m not the only historian in town, of course. : ) I’d encourage anyone with an interest to share more 20th c history here. The library has quite a few things for those with time to dig through them. Steven Twiss has poured over papers from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. BHS and VHS have projects collecting in the 20th c. And others have their areas of expertise.
We have the history section – for ALL local historians to share!
For example, I bet someone here could identify quite a few of the cars in the old I-95 photos. I can’t, but someone can. And maybe someone can tell us what the buildings in the distance in the photos were? I bet someone reading this knows someone who worked at one of the establishments at that corner. Can they tell us more?
A lot of time, people think their 2 cents doesn’t add much, but it really does. The tiniest clue can sometimes be helpful. When in doubt, share your information so others can benefit!
Click and zoom in
Zoom in for some fun details:
– Texaco gas at 31 cents per gallon. “Last Gas Before Interstate Highway” and also has a “Registered Rest Room.”
– Rent an EconoCar starting at $3.99
– Howard Johnson’s Ice Cream has 28 flavors!
– The Mobil station sells tires, allowing up to 6 months to pay.
The old prices.
I just looked up old gas prices. 31 cents a gallon was around 1965.
