Below you will find an advertisement from the Vermont Phoenix, April 1874, that informs of us the wonderful selection of lumber at the lumber yard.
“Lumber! Lumber! The undersigned is now replenishing his Lumber Yard with a fresh stock of Lumber for the spring trade consisting of shingles, lath, and finishing lumber of all descriptions,” it begins.
It continues “Bills of timber of all sizes got out to order at short notice. Also, Planing, Sawing and Scroll Sawing done in the best manner.”
“Mouldings of all descriptions, at whoelsale and retail, constantly on hand, at as low prices as can be had elsewhere. I will make a liberal discount to customers who pay cash on delivery of Lumber.”
The ad is signed by I. K. Allen and offers this postscript:
“P.S. All bills and accounts due me previous to April 1, 1874, must be paid immediately, or they will be left in the hands of an attorney for collection.”
You’ve been warned. So, if you are building a new house or barn this spring on your new lot in town, stop by I. K. Allen’s lumber yard to get your materials. I bet that if you build a house with his wood, it will still be standing in 1974!
the scroll saw
I’m pretty sure having a scroll saw was a relatively new tool, and once people learned how to do it, we got some very fancy ornamentation on houses and furniture around here.
The first mechanical scroll saws became popular in the US in the 1860’s, says a scroll saw site.
The P.S.
That’s priceless. An ad and a legal notice in one.
