  • Additional cash prizes

Second place will receive $25, and third place will receive $20.This should be way more fun than scratching a scratch ticket.

My almost fervent hope, is that we will bet a lot of people dressed in costumes, especially the adults.I myself hope to go as a Giant Rooster.

My wife Cynthia Houghton created one of the clay targets, a clay Cthulhu. We thought the slogan, “Kill a Clay Cthulhu for the kids” had a nice ring to it.

  • Regulation Pea?

Will this be using official peas, or will competitors be using spit wads and other projectiles?

    I see mention of soybeans.

    • Soylent green is . . . SOY

It would just be wrong, as well as confusing, to call it a soy shooter contest. I mean I myself doubt I would go to a “soy shooter contest.” But we will be handing out soy beans, not peas.

But we found with experimentation in our backyard, that soy beans (which we got at the co-op) really worked the best.

Peas have wrinkles in them, which cause unpredictable flight paths. The soy beans seem to shoot more smoothly.

Even more importantly, fit semi snugly in the most commonly available plastic straw pea shooter. Unless the projectile fits semi snugly, it is hard to get any pressure behind it, no matter how hard you blow.

  • Other Targets

We will have other targets too, such as a target of a baby bird that you have to feed the pea too, by accurately shooting the pea into its waiting mouth. No, not a real baby bird, a large image of a baby bird affixed to a box. If you get the pea in its mouth, it falls into the box, you get the point for the shot.

At each station, you get three shots. If you make all three shots into the target, you get all three points for that station. At some of the stations, you are trying to vanquish monsters, and at others you are trying to feed the hungry.

  • Always a winner

Wondering why the University didn’t apply for the Our Town $$… : )

I’m sure it would have been well spent in the pursuit of learning, art, and fun.

    • Our Town, a play by Thorton Wilder and a fund ?

      I didn’t know about it.

I will have to look it up.

  • We worked on more targets last night.

Some of the targets are frightful, and meant to elicit a sense of self preservation in the person shooting the peas.

And the others are poor little things, like baby birds,or a koala, that need to be fed a pea.
