Escape to Italy this week with the Vacanza in Italia Film Festival. Last film in the series! Wednesday March 27, 2013 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM.

What causes people to travel to Italy? Is it the food, the pace of life, the sun? Or is it the civilizing influence of all of this. Do they always find what they think they should?

Please join fellow cinephiles at Brooks Memorial Library for a series of films that will make you want to “vacanza in Italia.”

For Wednesday, March 27, the film stars Cher, Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Lily Tomlin.

MGM/UA; Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Rated PG; 116 minutes 1999.            

Set in Tuscany from 1932 to 1945, this bittersweet drama spans the reign of Italy’s Fascist regime, the outbreak of World War II and the arrival of peace. The action turns to the character of a young man (18-year-old newcomer Baird Wallace), taken under wing by five eccentric and strong-willed women living in Florence’s Anglo-American community. Starring Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench as a trio of colorful British expatriates. Also starring Lily Tomlin as an American archeologist and Cher as a wealthy, Jewish-American art dealer with a string of husbands and lovers behind her.

    No Titles

    Again, the Library is unable to tell you the name of this movie due to issues of rights, alas.

    That might make people stressed, and they may want Tea to help relax. With a warm beverage by their side, they can then properly contemplate if copyrights are good, or something more suitable for a country with leadership by Mussolini.

Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson (“THE CRYING GAME,” “TOM & VIV”) stars in and Mike Newell directs (“FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL”) this delightful remake of the original 1935 film about two repressed married women who rent an exquisite Italian villa for a month. Talented British thespians Joan Plowright and Jim Broadbent co-star in an experience that will leave your audience truly enchanted.

    Ahh, Enchanting copyrights and ownerships.

    Just like the Latchis couldn’t mention the Academy Awards, the Library isn’t allowed to name the movie they are showing outside of the building, hence the need to call them to ask about the title.

    A silly rule one must obey to show a film, in April, or any month.
