The Commons, Windham County’s local independent weekly, is proud to host Jerry Levy and Acting on Impulse Productions presenting Levy’s 10th Anniversary Celebration of Howard Zinn’s one-man play about the life of Karl Marx, MARX IN SOHO, at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main St, Brattleboro VT.
These benefit performances will be on the evenings of Thursday, November 20th and Saturday, November 22nd at7:30 p.m.
For enthusiasts who are familiar with the play and with Levy’s passion for it, there’s more! On the intervening evening of Friday, November 21st at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon, November 23rd at 3:00p.m., the world premier of Levy’s own play, THE THIRD COMING: MARX RETURNS will be performed with Levy again playing the role of Marx.
Historian Zinn wrote MARX IN SOHO in 1991. Marlboro College Sociology Professor Emeritus Jerry Levy has performed the role of Marx over 250 times in over 80 cities and tours across North America and Europe. Levy first produced and acted in this one-man show at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and at Marlboro College in 2004 and is excited to be presenting it once again to audiences in Brattleboro.
Levy says he continues to be inspired by Howard Zinn and is intrigued by this important and enigmatic figure (Marx), so humanized, in MARX IN SOHO. This inspiration led to his continuing to explore the life in Marx in his own play, THE THIRD COMING: MARX RETURNS. How would he (Marx) be influenced by watching what has transpired on earth, particularly the U.S, since his brief visit in 1991?
Levy’s play is meant to stand on its own but it continues Zinn’s dramatic study of Marx, taking it in a different direction: the life and afterlife of Karl Marx.
Performances of MARX IN SOHO are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 20th and Saturday, November 22nd. Performances of THE THIRD COMING: MARX RETURNS are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21st and at 3:00p.m. on Sunday, November 23rd. All performances are at the Hooker-Dunham Theater on Main Street in Brattleboro, VT.
Tickets are available at the door: $15 for General admission, $10 for Seniors and Students. For those wishing to see both plays, the 2-play package is $20 for general admission, $15 for Seniors and Students. Proceeds for all performances are benefit Vermont Independent Media, publisher of The Commons, Windham County’s award-winning local independent non-profit community newspaper, and its media literacy program the Media Mentoring Project.

tonight's show ...
.. .was surprisingly full for a Thursday evening performance. We expect that the next three shows will sell-out. Many people have already bought two-fers.
So … reservations highly recommended.
