October 5 EUGENE ONEGIN (Tchaikovsky) – New Production Start time 1:00. Run Time 4 hrs 4 min.
Acclaimed English director Deborah Warner’s new production of the romantic tragedy conducted by Valery Gergiev. Anna Netrebko as Tatiana and Mariusz Kwiecien as the self-confident Eugene Onegin in a much-admired interpretation he has sung in many of the world’s leading Opera houses. The Sunday Telegraph praised it’s “mixture of haunting visual and emotional impact: cutting straight to the heart of the work…”
October 6 NT OTHELLO Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 30 min
A major new production Shakespeare’s celebrated play about the destructive power of jealousy. Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester ( Henry V at the National Theatre, BBC’s Hustle) takes the title role. Playing opposite him as the duplicitous Iago is fellow Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans, James Bond; Skyfall), who is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of Athens, One Man, Two Guvnors) following their acclaimed collaboration on the National Theatre’s recent production of Hamlet.
October 26 THE NOSE (Shostakovich) Start time 1:00. Run time 2 hrs 15 min
William Kentridge’s dazzlingly innovative production of Shostakovich’s shocking, unconventional opera about a beleaguered Russian official and his runaway nose returns to the Met since its sold-out 2010 premiere. Pavel Smelkov conducts a cast led by Paulo Szot as the hapless Kovalyov, with Andrey Popov as the menacing Police Inspector and Alexander Lewis as Kovalyov’s peripatetic nose.
October 27 NT MACBETH Start time 1:00
Kennenth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn, Hamlet) in his first Shakespeare performance in over a decade as Macbeth, and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who, ER) as Lady Macbeth. Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, this electrifying new production of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate deconsecrated Manchester church. This was pre-recorded at Manchester International Festival’s production of Macbeth.
November 9 TOSCA (Puccini) Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 35 min
Patricia Racette portrays the tempestuous diva Floria Tosca in Luc Bondy’s production of Puccini’s enduring favorite. Roberto Alagna sings Tosca’s lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and George Gagnidze is the corrupt, lustful Scarpia. Riccardo Frizza conducts Pccini’s sweeping, dramatic tale of murder, lust, and political intrigue.
November 10 NT HAMLET Start time 1:00. Run time 4 hrs
National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast of Hamlet returns as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. Olivier Award-winning actor Rory Kinnear plays Hamlet in a dynamic new production of Shakespeare’s complex and profound play about the human condition, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
December 14 FALSTAFF (Verdi) – New Production Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 20 min
Verdi’s brilliant final masterpiece has its first new Met production in nearly 50 years, conducted by James Levine and directed by Robert Carsen. Ambrogio Maestri sings the iconic basso buffo role of Sir John Falstaff, the boorish, blustery character originally seen in Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Merry Wives of Windsor. Angela Meade is Alice Ford, one of many objects of Falstaff’s affection, and Stephanie Blythe is the sharp-tongued Mistress Quickly.
December 15 NT FRANKENSTEIN Start time 1:00. Run time 2 hrs 4 min
National Theatre Live’s 2011 broadcast returns to cinemas as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations. Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run and went on to win awards including the 2012 Oliver Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production with Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, BBC’s Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, CBS’s Elementary) alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
February 8 RUSALKA (Dvorak) Start time 1:00. Run time 4 hrs
Renèe Fleming sings her first Live in HD performance of one of her signature roles, the lovelorn mermaid Rusalka, in Dvorak’s sumptuously melodic opera. Yannick Nézt-Séguin conducts a cast that also includes Piortr Beczala as the handsome Prince Rusalka years to love.
February 9 NT HABIT OF ART Start time 1:00. Run time 2 hrs 35 min
Reprisal of National Theatre’s 2010 broadcast of Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play with Richard Griffiths, Alex Jennings and Frances de la Tour. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, WH Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, and they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.
Alan Bennett’s play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.
March 1 PRINCE IGOR (Borodin) – New Production Start time 12:00 Run time 4 hrs 30 min
Alexander Borodin’s epic has its first Met performance since 1917 in this new production staged by noted Russian opera director Dmitri Tcherniakov in his Met debut. Giannandrea Noseda conducts the lush score, famous for its celebrated “Polovtsian Dances,” and Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title roel of a 12th-century Russian hero. The cast also includes Oksana Dyka in her Met debut as Yaroslavna, Igor’s emotionally fragile second wife; Anita Rachvelishvili as the fiery Polovtsian princess Konchakovna; Sergey Smishkur in his Met debut as Vladimir Igorevich, Igor’s son and Konchakovna’s lover.
March 15 WERTHER (Massenet) – New Production Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 15 min
Director Richard Eyre returns to the Met with a new staging of Massenet’s tragic romance, starring Jonas Kaufmann and Elīna Garanča in their first Met performances as the brooding poet Werther and his unattainable love, Charlotte, Lisette Oropesa sings the role of Sophie, Charlotte’s sister.
March 16 CORIOLANUS Start time 1:00 Run time 3 hrs
When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender; Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.
April 5 LA BOHEME (Puccini) Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 25 min
An exciting young cast stars in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production, the most-performed opera in Met history. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo stars as the passionate writer Rodolfo, and Romanian soprano Anita Hartig makes her Met Debut as his consumptive lover, Mimi. Susanna Phillips sings the flirtatious Musetta and Massimo Cavalletti is the painter Marcello, led by rising conductor Stefano Ranzani.
April 26 COSI FAN TUTTI (Mozart) Start time 1:00. Run time 4 hrs 5 min
James Levine conducts the first Live HD performance of Mozart’s barbed romance. Lesley Koenig’s sleek production will star Susanna Phillips and Isabel Leonard as the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella; Matthew Polenzani and Rodion Pogossov as their fiancės’ Ferrando and Guglielmo; Danielle de Niese as their feisty maid Despina; and Maurizio Muraro as the cynical Don Alfonso.
May 10 LA CENERENTOLA (Rossini) Start time 1:00. Run time 3 hrs 40 mins
Joyce DiDonato sings her first Met performances of the title of the title character in Rossini’s Cinderella story, La Cenerentola, with bel canto master Juan Diego Flórez as her dashing prince. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads a cast that also includes Pietro Spagnoli I his Met debut as the servant Dandini, Alessandro Corbelli as Cenerentola’s stepfather Don Magnifico, and Luca Pisarono as Don Ramiro’s tutor, Alidoro.
