Noticed Around Brattleboro - Fall 2017

Another opportunity to list the little things that have caught your eye about town. Such as:

- New parking lot at the Post Office

- The collection of stores just over the West River has branded the building "On The Waterfront" - (which brings to mind relaxing thoughts of corruption and longshoremen: "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody instead of a bum, which is what I am.")

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Panhandling Sign Defeated, Budget Season Approaches

There will be no Town panhandling sign. That was the split decision of the Brattleboro Selectboard Tuesday evening.

The board had an active and long night. Much of it had to do with financial matters and planning, such as approving a letter of intent to rent space in the Municipal Center, reviewing long term financial plans, buying a fire truck, debating the thickness of single use plastic bags, and contemplating energy issues.

Budget season starts officially at the next meeting, but it peeked its head in and said hello this week.

Revised Revised Panhandling Sign Text

The Selectboard will be taking up the matter of a possible panhandling sign at tonight's meeting, and for the momentous occasion a new draft of proposed language has been given to the board for consideration:

“Brattleboro is a compassionate community and recognizes that it is legal for people to carry signs or to ask for money in public places. We are also committed to the safety of every resident and visitor in our town and recognize that aggressive or threatening behavior can cause legal activites to become illegal. If you feel threatened, you can call the Police at 802-257-7950 or dial 9-1-1 in an emergency. If you need food, shelter, or other assistance, you can call 2-1-1 for referral to local service agencies.”

Selectboard Meeting Notes - Panhandling Sign Discussed Further, Tabled For Further Discussion

A three member Brattleboro Selectboard postponed a few issues on their agenda for the return of a full board, but took up the issue of a revised panhandling sign without them. After another long and involved discussion, the matter was tabled for when the full board returns.

A box of syringes served as an unexpected centerpiece to the board’s meeting table, placed there by a frustrated resident. A bid for pump station improvements at the Welcome Center was approved, SeVEDS gave an annual update, and committee appointments were made.
