Selectboard Meeting Notes - Panhandling Sign Discussed Further, Tabled For Further Discussion

A three member Brattleboro Selectboard postponed a few issues on their agenda for the return of a full board, but took up the issue of a revised panhandling sign without them. After another long and involved discussion, the matter was tabled for when the full board returns.

A box of syringes served as an unexpected centerpiece to the board’s meeting table, placed there by a frustrated resident. A bid for pump station improvements at the Welcome Center was approved, SeVEDS gave an annual update, and committee appointments were made.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, Signs, & Climate

Brattleboro’s Town Manager revealed the results of his summer explorations of issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. He got generally good reviews for the summary of his report, but more than a few requested some additional specifics be included. Brattleboro seems to be in a good position to make progress over the long term, but benchmarks and budgets might help.

The pesky panhandling sign returned in a semi-uncertain form, with wording in question and sponsoring organizations and services asking for their logos to be removed. The private effort was to be a collaboration, but appears to have offended a few too many.

The board also signed a statement in support of other climate agreements being signed around the globe.  (For Kate O’Connor’s sake, I’ll say here that Brattleboro has been working on climate issues for a long time, is committed to action, and will continue to be so.)

All this, and possibly more.

Selectboard Meeting Notes - Panhandling, and A Big Ol' Meeting To Catch Up

The Brattleboro Selectboard returned from summer break to a full agenda and long meeting. A continued discussion of panhandling provided updates on efforts now underway as well as a new suggestion for a sign explaining “the rules.”

The panhandling discussion led some to a discussion of drug use on Flat street, which the Chief of Police says is on the rise and spreading to adjacent areas.

Other matters included grants, proposed parking and speed limit changes, bigger acts possibly coming to the Latchis, new bus routes and schedules, and much more.
