Celebrate Heirloom Apples at Scott Farm Orchard: 15th Annual Heirloom Apple Day -Sunday, October 8

The 15th Annual Heirloom Apple Day at Scott Farm Orchard on Kipling Road in Dummerston, VT beckons apple lovers of all ages to celebrate this iconic fall fruit. Come visit the 571-acre historic farm and orchard that border Rudyard Kipling’s former Vermont home, Naulakha, and other historic rental properties owned and renovated by Landmark Trust USA.   

On Sunday, October 8 at 10 AM, Noon and 2 PM, Scott Farm’s Orchardist Zeke Goodband entertains guests with the enlightening history of the orchard and its ecologically-grown fruits, accompanied by a free tasting of some of the more than 125 varieties of heirloom apples grown on the property.

Sample Old World and Early American heirloom varieties such as Esopus Spitzenburg, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson, grown at Monticello;  Reine des Reinette, a French apple from the 1700s, considered the best hard cider apple in Normandy; Blue Pearmain, a New England apple dating back to the 1700s, mentioned by Henry David Thoreau in his journal, and Cox’s Orange Pippin, an English favorite, awarded the highest honors by the Royal Horticultural Society—just to name a few of the exciting flavors bound to excite your palate.

Scott Farm and Eden Specialty Ciders Host an All-New Kingston Black Hard Cider Festival featuring 5 Cider Makers from 4 States- Sept 24, 2017

 In honor of the Kingston Black, the “One Apple to Rule them All”, five cider makers from four states come together at Scott Farm Orchard on Sunday, September 24 from 12-4PM to showcase their hard ciders—made with this highly-prized heirloom apple, sparsely grown in the U.S.

 Hard cider enthusiasts have the opportunity to meet Scott Farm orchardist Ezekiel Goodband, cider makers from Eden Specialty Ciders of Newport, VT, Farnum Hill Ciders of Lebanon, NH, Slyboro Ciderhouse of Granville, NY, Stormalong Ciders of Sherborn, MA, and Whetstone Ciderworks of Marlboro, VT, as well as Chelsea Green Senior Editor Ben Watson, author of Cider Hard and Sweet: History, Traditions and Making Your Own, who will be available to sign books.

Dummerston Community Center Rummage and Tag Sale

The Dummerston Community Center will be holding a Rummage Sale on Saturday, September 9th from 9 am-noon. Proceeds will help to offset maintenance & operating costs for the building. Items for sale include books, toys, games, kitchenware, clothing, footwear and many miscellaneous items and treasures.

Coffee Break at Welcome Center

The Dummerston Community Center is holding a Coffee Break (bake, snack, coffee) fundraiser at the I-91 Guilford Vermont Welcome Center on Friday, June 30 from 7:30 am to 7 pm. Donations of baked goods, snacks, fruit, veggies, coffee, coffee cream, bagels etc. are needed. Any donation of food, gift certificates, or money would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers to help on Friday, June 30 at the food tables are also needed. The Community Center will be open on Thursday, June 29 from 9 am to 8 pm for drop-off of donations.

Dummerston Community Center to host Pampered Chef Fundraiser

The Dummerston Community Center is hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser on Saturday, March 4th from 12:55-2:55pm. For more information or to RSVP, call Kim at 802-257-8602, Ann at 802-254-2415, or Jean at 802-254-9212.

Kim Martin will host the show, with new spring products, recipes, demonstrations of many cooking needs, also hands-on-cooking and the tasting of spices, sauces, and rubs. There will be special drawings through-out the show. Proceeds will assist in operating expenses for the Community Center

New Beginners Hunyuan Chen Style Taiji Quan Starting in Dummerston January 3rd.

Beginner's Hunyuan Taiji Quan is a 14 week series that  introduces the principles of  alignment, balance, correct movement, qi (vital energy) cultivation. Each week participants will learn a new movement of the Hunyuan 12 movement Taiji Quan form. Through dedicated practice, students will complete the form by the end of the series. Participants will also learn chan si gong (silk reeling) exercises to help open and relax the joints while simultaneously nourishing the vital qi and blood of the body. All are foundational practices to re-condition the mind/body connection, deepening one's capacity to relax, release stress, improve balance, and build core strength.

Evening of Community Contra Dancing in Dummerston

The Village Dance Series provides an opportunity for families and friends to come together to enjoy one of New England’s traditional pastimes. Experience is not necessary, as all the dances are taught.

Our next evening of community contra and square dances will take place at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center on Saturday, October 17, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Mary Cay Brass will be calling the dance. There will be a traditional folk tale midway through the evening. The program will include traditional New England contra dances, square dances, circle mixers, and couple dances.

Donations Needed for Coffee Break at the Vermont Welcome Center

The Dummerston Community Center is holding an all day bake, snack, coffee fundraiser at the Vermont Welcome Center, on Friday, June 26th from 7:30 AM to 7 PM. We need your donations of baked goods, snacks, fruit, veggies, coffee, coffee cream, bagels etc.

Any donation food, gift certificates or money would be greatly appreciated.Volunteers to help on the 26th at the snack tables are also needed.

Announcing Solarize Dummerston – a program created by volunteers to help you go solar. Solarize programs help lower the cost for installers and for participants by using volunteer and grass root efforts.

Sign up for free if you live in the greater Dummerston area.

Goals:

Launch the Solarize Dummerston Program in Early Summer 2015
Simplify and de-mystify the process of going solar for the consumer.
Educate those interested in Solar on the options available as well as the technology.
Options will include roof mount PV, ground mount PV, as well as community solar.
Select an installer who offers a low cost quality product through group purchasing power.

Investigation into Double Fatal Fire in Dummerston, VT

Dummerston, VT - 1/6/14 - At approximately 5:00AM on January 6, 2014, Keene Mutual Aid contacted the Vermont State Police requesting a fire investigation at a residence located at 420 School House Road in Dummerston. The fire was initially reported at 4:41AM and fire personnel from the Putney, Guilford, Brattleboro, and West Dummerston Fire Departments responded immediately to the incident. The fire destroyed the residence, however firefighters were able to contain the fire; thereby preventing damage to the surrounding residences.

Archer Mayor Talk at Dummerston Community Center

Archer Mayor will be present and discuss his latest Joe Gunther mystery novel "Three can keep a Secret" on Monday Nov. 18th, at 7 PM at the Dummerston Community Center.

Autographed new and recent novels will be available for purchase, to benefit the Dummerston Community Center operating and maintenance expenses. The Community Center is located at 150 West Street in West Dummerston Village, and is Handicap accessible.

Dairy Nutrition Program with Amy Fletcher

Dummerston Cares will present the program "Dairy Nutrition" with Amy Fletcher, Nutritionist.
Monday, Nov.18th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

The program and light luncheon will be held at the Dummerston Community Center located at 150 West Street, in the West Dummerston Village. Amy will present a short Power Point presentation and a brief talk on nutritious dairy products, followed by general participation and conversation.

Dummerston Emergency Fuel Fund Supper Fundraiser

A Baked Bean & Ham supper will be held on Saturday Oct. 26th from 5-7p.m. at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center.
Delicious baked beans, baked ham, (hot dogs if preferred) with tasty scalloped potatoes, coleslaw, marinated carrots, and rolls. Yummy gingerbread with real whipped cream for dessert.

Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 5-12 years old.
Take-out is available. Call 254-1138 between 5-7 p.m. on the 26th to order.
