My Beautiful Aleppo

Beautiful Aleppo with your

generous people who welcomed

me into your homes, fed me dates

and tea as we laughed together.

My ancient Aleppo that I would wander

through in the early morning, safe and

secure, drinking coffee and eating sweets.

My sisters and brothers who welcomed

me with such love and care –

Where are you now?

Graceful Aleppo with your

ancient labyrinth markets —

now a heap of rubble and death.

Beautiful Aleppo with the Grand Mosque

once so exquisite and elegant…prayer calls

would rise in the dawn light with

a glorious chorus of Allah Akbar.

My beautiful Aleppo why is Putin

and Bashar Al Assad killing you?

The Apocalypse in Aleppo ..

Hospitals bombed

Schools destroyed

Innocent men, women, children

by the thousands killed.

Would Allah and all the prophets weep

at the genocide in Aleppo?

This is not Islam, this is shooma,

a shame beyond words.

Are you still alive?

My letter sent and returned, others

without response.  Is this message

heard?  Or does the world seem cold

and quiet?  Indifferent to the apocalypse.

My Syrian sisters and brothers who welcomed

me with such love and care –

Where are you now?

Can I welcome you into my home

in Vermont?
