Monumental Questions

The events in (and following) Charlottesville are myriad and complex. There is a stew of issues bubbling and boiling. To name but a few: race, Neo-Nazism, history, culture, the Civil War, monuments, art, speech, accountability, Trump & Co., ancestors, and many more.

The easy part (for most people) is denouncing the hate, white supremacy, and violence. I can pat myself on the back and tell myself that’s not me, that’s not what I believe, and I’m against it in all forms. I very much dislike hatred, and work to make the world a better place as best I can.

The harder part is figuring out what to do about the rest of it.

Dummerston Perennial Swappers Visited Ann Newsmith's Garden on Aug. 10, 2017

It is free to join the Dummerston Perennial Swappers. New gardeners can come and get free perennials and advice from seasoned gardeners who have too much of one thing or another and would rather share the wealth than throw perfect plants into a compost heap. We meet every two weeks in the growing season. Then we tour a local garden.

This one belonged to Ann Newsmith in West Brattleboro. Next Perennial Swappers meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday 24 August, meeting outside the church in Dummerston Center.for the swap, then we will tour the Daigler garden. Great for getting ideas and just enjoying the beauty. Membership is free but everybody puts a dollar in the cookie tin to cover expenses ( maps, directions, ice cream for last meeting of the season)

Brattleboro Tree Board Needs Members

Do you like trees? They reduce energy use, provide erosion control, and help control storm water runoff. The Brattleboro Tree Advisory Board is short-handed and needs two new members. If you are a resident of Brattleboro, and want to help us look after the Town’s trees, fill out the online application at the Town’s website: www.brattleboro.org > Serving the Community > Boards and Committees > Application. (Don’t be intimidated by the application; it’s an all-purpose document. If you have questions about it, Jan Anderson at 251-8100 can help.)

Kiplings Ode to the Lords of Karma

The Gods of the Copybook Headings1, 2

by Rudyard Kipling

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.
We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.
