Free Class 4 Kids Fun with Food and Art: Animal Dreams

Meet us at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center (BMAC) first for an up-close look at the current art exhibit followed by a hands-on creative activity led by Linda Whelihan, educator at BMAC. Afterward, we will walk up to the Brattleboro Food Co-op Cooking Classroom and make something delicious using the Vermont Harvest of the Month vegetable: sweet potatoes.

When you enter our cooking classroom, you will be transported to
Poland, where we will be making the national dish of this fertile Eastern
European country: pierogi (or as
Lizi's Mom used to call them, "varenyky"). Kids and adults alike eat
these savory (or sweet) small, pillowy dough pockets filled with cabbage,
onions and mashed potatoes. In order to honor the Vermont Harvest of the Month
vegetable, we will make ours with sweet potatoes, just to see how a global

36th Annual Design-A-Plate

Date & Time: 
Oct 21 2017 - 10:00am - 3:00pm

Stop in any time between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to make a
10-inch melamine plate or 20-ounce melamine bowl.  Each item costs $6.00.
Cash and checks made out to Brooks Memorial Library are accepted. Plates and
bowls will be ready for pickup in December, just in time for holiday gift
giving. Design-A-Plate is great for children of all ages and a fun measure of
your child’s changes through the years. The workshop will be held in the
Meeting Room. For more information, please call the Children’s Room at

Medieval Faire - Family Favorite

On Saturday, October 7, from 10 am to 4 pm, The Grammar School in Putney, Vermont, will transform our campus into a medieval village once again as we host our annual Medieval Faire. This event has been a family favorite for 30 years!

Enjoy the festivities while the King and his royal court preside over the Faire. Kids can ride a flying dragon, battle a knight, and watch a live joust on horseback.

Fairgoers can also shop for goods in the village market, watch artisan demonstrations including blacksmithing, woodcarving, chain mail creation and more! You can even be knighted by the King himself!

Birds of prey from the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum
Fencing demonstrations
Archery and slingshot ranges
Climbing walls

Creepy Halloween Cupcakes for Kids

Come in costume! Be ready to decorate cupcakes with magical
and edible "this" and "thats." After the class, have a bite
to eat at the Café before joining others for the "Horribles Parade"
which begins right outside the front doors of the Co-op.

Pupusas are what El Salvadorian kids eat when they crave "grilled cheese": magical pockets of corn dough filled with cheese, beans or meat. They eat them plain or with curtido, a tangy cabbage
salad. We will make masa dough, shape it, fill it, and design our own slaw using the Harvest of the Month Vegetable: Kale.

Mediterranean island off the coast of Lebanon and Israel.  It has a rich
history and its food is influenced by many surrounding cultures including
Italy, Turkey and Syria. We will make a traditional sweet and sour lemony soup
with zucchini and celery. Come ready to practice your knife skills!
