WSWMD Hazardous Waste Collection

2. Old School Enrichment Center, 1 School Street, Wilmington

Fees/Limits: $5 per household/10-gallons

The collection is open to residents and businesses in the following towns: Brattleboro, Brookline, Dover, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Jamaica, Marlboro, Newfane, Putney, Readsboro, Somerset, Stratton, Townshend, Vernon, Wardsboro, Westminster, Whitingham & Wilmington.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can be identified by key words on the container label: danger, warning and caution. The container may also describe the health or environmental hazard of the product by using the following words: flammable, combustible, poison, caustic, and irritant.

Take this opportunity to clean your shelves and closets of nasty chemicals that should not be thrown away in your daily trash.

What to bring: Paint strippers, paint thinners, adhesives, muriatic acid, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, weed killers, moth balls, motor oil, fuel, gasoline, kerosene, antifreeze, engine degreaser, brake fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, lighter fluid, oven cleaners, floor and metal polishes, rug and upholstery cleaners, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, drain and toilet cleaners, spot removers, flea control products, moth balls.

What NOT to bring: Paint Products*, empty containers such as paint cans and cleaning bottles, non-household hazardous waste, batteries, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, radioactive wastes (e.g. smoke detectors), explosives, ammunition, asbestos, pharmaceuticals and medical waste.

*Paint Products: Paint products such as primers, sealers, stains, urethanes, varnishes, sealers, rust preventatives, latex, acrylic, and oil based paints are accepted FREE, year-round, at WSWMD. There is a 10-can limit/visit.

Businesses, schools and institutions that generate less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month can take part in the collection. Pre-registration is required for all businesses. An inventory of the waste must be faxed or emailed to Kristen Benoit and fees will be determined.
